Seaside Crafts Wednesday, Jul 18 2018

We have been on vacation this week which for us during the summer means fishing, shelling and water fun. And with that it means lots of shells that are beautiful but what do you do with them? Easy answer get a great bowl or container and display your finds.

This can be great and pretty. And if you are all about coastal design this is perfect. But what if you want to do something a little more? How about a shadow box?

I love these as they don’t have to be perfect and you can french mount them, put them on a console or hang them on the wall. They are perfect for all of the small shells you pick up, or in our case the ones the youngest kids pick up.

This time on vacation we got a bunch of conch shells so these are not good options for them. So here are some thoughts of what we will be doing with our conch shells.

I don’t get to do a lot of crafting because I am always working on clients projects, but I am so excited to take some time and create so pretty pieces. And the best part is that they will remind us of our fantastic vacation!

Holiday Decorating Wednesday, Nov 22 2017

I have found over the years that people either love to decorate their house, love to have it decorated but don’t want to do it or don’t do anything. Sometimes I think that the don’t do anything is because they just don’t know where to start. So I thought I would walk everyone through the process that we go through when decorating a client’s home for the holidays.

We first start by going through all that they have from previous years. Determine what still looks good, what they still like and what has meaning to them. Once we know what we have to start with we talk about what type of tree they would like if they don’t already have a tree. Many of my clients like to have a real tree. So we talk about how big the tree can be and how bushy do we want, and if there is a specific tree that they like. Fraser firs are very popular and tend to be the first choice. My father always liked blue spruces so every other year when growing up we got a blue spruce. We will get the tree for the client and put it up the day before we will be decorating so that it will fall out. This is really important, as you do not want to decorate the tree when all of the branches are still pointing upwards from being bundled up.

But before we even get to decorating the tree we need to finish getting all the the additional items for our clients, if this is the first time that we are decorating for them. This will include wall art, accessories for the tops of cabinets and tables, floral arrangements for counter tops and dining tables, and other holiday decor. I prefer to use great pieces that can be adjusted based on the season. For instance I love floor candle holders, these are great elements to any room and you can change the way that the feel in the room by changing the candles that are on top. I also love blanket ladders, as these are also a great piece that adds texture and comfort to a space that can be changed to fit with the season.

Once we have everything that we need it is time to get to decorating. For me it all starts with the tree. Make sure you have enough lights, in fact you can almost always use the rule of thumb that you can add one more strand of lights than you think you need. Add different elements to your tree like flowers and glitter streamers and tree picks. They will add so much to the look. I usually custom make all of the floral arrangements for my clients. I love to add candles to the dining table arrangements and some scents as well. So think either scented candles or the scent sticks that can make the silk floral arrangements feel real.

Here is a house that we did recently.

It is so important to have touches everywhere but not too much. We don’t want to see Santa and Frosty everywhere, but we do want to feel like everything is complete.

And since it is just the start of the season there is still time to get your house ready. We still have some available spots to get you ready for the holidays. Book your appointment today. It will be like magic.

Fall Decorating Thursday, Sep 7 2017

So excited that the series Design Undefined has started to air with ABC. We started the series with tips on how to decorate for fall. I think this can be hard because there is the thought that fall decor has to be covered in pumpkins and leaves. That is not the case we can decorate for fall with classic elegance. Here are my tips for getting your home ready for fall.

So have fun but remember you probably have lots of elements at home that you can easily change up to give your home the fall feel.

Holiday Crafts with the Kids Saturday, Nov 29 2014

It is officially the holiday season, and that means the kids are home from school. Which means I’m constantly searching for things for them to do. And since it is the holiday season that means crafts, but hey I can’t do just any craft it has to be something different. So this year we decided to decorate glass ornaments. I figured hey we always lose a few every year, either from the animals, kids, or just plan clumsiness. So extra ornaments are never a problem. We decided to try the glitter and floor cleaner method.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about it is pretty simple and you can Google videos if you need to see the whole process. But the basic idea is you fill the glass ornament with the liquid floor cleaner, we used one the smells like almonds which was a nice addition, you swirl it around in the ornament then pour it out. Make sure to not have any bubbles. You then fill the ornament with the glitter of your choice, make sure it’s not glitter glue, swirl it around in the ornament to cover all of the inside. Then pour out the extra glitter. Very easy, and the kids had a great time. It was a little more difficult for Elliana at age three but perfect for Aden at age seven, Aaron at fifteen was too cool to join in.

As you do them you can have fun and mix different colors together and create swirl designs or rainbow ornaments. After a few the technique is really easy and the final protect is really nice. And the best part is that with the glitter on the inside it shouldn’t crack and flake off over time. If you are going to let the kids do the decorating be prepared to have glitter everywhere, and vacuuming just doesn’t get it all up.

Here are some pictures of our finished ornaments and my son Aden decorating.

These will make great gifts for teachers, additions to the tree, and perfect to fill vases and hang for decorating. So don’t leave the kids out when decorating for the holidays, let them join in and have fun together as a family!

Decorating with the Kids Sunday, Nov 16 2014

As the holidays get closer the kids start to really get into the spirit. Which means they love to start doing things around the house to bring the season into the home. So today we worked together to create a few arrangements to place around the house. I try to do little bits at a time so that it is not overwhelming and doesn’t take all of the weekend. Here are our projects from today.

It’s that time of year again, holiday times. That means company and parties and sometimes lots of stress over how to get it right. Decorating with Candles Tuesday, Dec 3 2013

As the holiday season continues in full swing this is the time of year that candles tend to come out for decorating. I strongly feel that candles are great to use all year round for decorating in your home. I love to use them on dining tables, on bathroom vanities, floor candles for corners of rooms that need a little something extra, and on cocktail tables. So I thought I would post a few pictures of different ways to use candles in your home for the holidays and all year round.

Thanksgiving with the family Wednesday, Nov 13 2013

Thanksgiving is coming up and like all holidays it is about family. One very large part of our family are our kids. As holidays are meant to celebrate together I love to find ways to incorporate the kids in the holiday preparations.

The first way to get the kids involved is to have them make some of the decorations. Remember keep it kid friendly and age appropriate. Here are some different ideas to use and adapt to your family.

Mini pumpkin turkeys

Pinecone turkeys

These can be easily mixed into the earlier fall decorations that we talked about in a previous post. They are fun to do with the kids, gets them excited about the holiday and makes them feel special for contributing.

During the meal the kids and get a bit restless. This makes for a tough experience for the adults especially of there are adults that don’t have kids. So here are some great ideas for table settings for the kids that will also entertain.

Mazes are great for older kids.

And last but not least have the kids get involved in the desserts. Make something fun and they will add to your decorations for the holiday.
